The rumored device is a stand-alone virtual reality device, something Nintendo has yet to step into. While the details are limited, speculations are running wild, sparking interest among Nintendo fans. Particularly because, as we all know, Nintendo likes to break away from the pack and do their own thing. What could they have in mind for a unique take on VR/AR?
Virtual Reality in gaming is certainly burgeoning with Sony and other tech companies having a fair share of the market. It seems now that Nintendo wants a piece of that pie; the Japanese tech giant recently filed a patent for a homegrown VR headset. There are indications that the possible headset will be a mix of virtual and augmented reality, while also pushing the limits further, as the Nintendo patent suggests that a device will be able to maintain certain display elements within your field of view, even as you move your head.
Moreover, leaks suggest implementing advanced tracking technology similar to the HTC Vive. This is a motion capture device that is capable of sensing objects around the device. When this is added to a VR headset, it will certainly enhance the overall experience. One of the most interesting features of this patent is that the headset appears to have its own CPU and GPU. This means it can work on its own, without requiring a constant connection to a gaming console, like Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.
That said, it is no surprise that Nintendo is moving towards virtual reality headsets. One of their own creations can be another industry changer. Playing Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, or some other party games, players could interact with each other and the game world, fully immersed. With a number of family-friendly IPs under their belt, Nintendo could bring a slew of noteworthy titles to your living room with a potential virtual headset.
The Japanese video-gaming giant hasn’t confirmed anything on the matter but all leaks point out that the company is interested in the market. In addition to a VR headset, Nintendo has plenty more in store than the rumored Switch 2.
Speaking of which, back in 2017, Nintendo had another interesting patent. The patent includes linked screens, but that has yet to see the light of day. Nevertheless, this unique system would allow multiple Nintendo Switch consoles to be connected, creating a larger screen for multiplayer games.
Moreover, players would be able to extend the additional screen to any side they want by just pointing the finger thanks to the tracking sensor within the screen. Maybe it’s time for the patent to enter production with the release of Nintendo Switch 2.
Furthermore, leaks are suggesting Nintendo has a touchscreen controller that is yet to enter production. The first patent for such a controller was filed back in 2015 before Nintendo Switch was released. The new controller by Nintendo is oval-shaped and has a touchscreen display, haptic feedback, and even a voice recognition option. While the technology was far behind when the patent was first filed, the advancement since then is immeasurable.
The new potential touchscreen controller would be a fantastic addition to the already existing Switch or the upcoming Switch 2. Players will be able to map controls to their own liking while tilting and moving the controller up or down will result in the same in-game motion. Furthermore, players will be able to talk with the controller thanks to audio AI integration, which will be able to remind players of the selected control buttons.
And let’s be honest – a controller with few buttons but a touchscreen adds to the notion that gameplay might be more oriented around a VR headset than a controller.
Perhaps they could get away with the goggles being a 'dumb' add-on they pack in with a high profile game, with all the required tech being present in the Switch2.
Made it past 3 stages okay. The 3rd stage is surprisingly easy and crap. The 4th and final stage is some rank bullshit.
The game is just unbalanced and blatantly unfair frequently.
Biggest problem with these old games is you can't move at all in mid-air. So you often just jump and end up hitting some projectile that was shot off screen. Also crappy slopes in this game, even very short ones, you find yourself randomly slipping off edges to the abyss.
Then there are unavoidable attacks where you duck or jump to avoid bullets, only to be trapped and hit by other bullets. There's no way out. The game just wants to eat your health at these bits.
Playing this game makes me appreciate Ghouls and Ghosts more.

Monolith Soft, the studio behind the Xenoblade Chronicles series, is expanding its in-house engine for use on future titles thanks to its newly-founded R&D department (thanks, Automaton).
That is according to the company’s Chief Creative Officer Tetsuya Takahashi and lead programmer Michihiko Inaba, who, in a recent interview with Japanese outlet CGworld, spoke about the company's plans for the future as it plans to tackle bigger development projects.
According to Inaba, the currently in-development engine is based on the one the company created for 2010's Xenoblade Chronicles, with the goal being to one day have it fully managed by the internal R&D team. For the time being, several different development teams are working on the engine's modelling and effect technologies before all are compiled into the finished product.
Despite the difficulties of maintaining an engine in-house, Takahashi believes it will all be worthwhile: "We don't currently have the option of using engines made by other companies," he told CGworld, "This is because in-house engines are easier to customise to suit our needs and are easier to use".
According to Takahashi, Monolith Soft has wanted an internal R&D department for years, though it had too few employees to make it happen without detracting from the development team. That was until the company started working with Nintendo, "as the scale of development became larger, the level of demands for development also increased".
These increasing demands lead to an increased workforce and, in turn, room for an R&D team. The new department (helmed by Inaba) aims to streamline the development process, support tool development, and research/develop new technologies, all of which seem like solid choices as the company looks to future titles.
As for what the company's future holds, we're just going to have to wait and see. We were blown away by Xenoblade Chronicles 3 when it landed on Switch in 2022, so we'd hope that the team is cooking something up for 'Switch 2' (though that is yet to be confirmed, of course). All eyes on this swanky new engine then, eh?

I've loved all 4 games, but Xenoblade 2 had a huge hump to get over which a lot people seemed to experience.
I was an early buyer so it wasn't patched back then. The map was crap, you couldn't review instruction screens so if you left the game for a few weeks it was impossible to get back into.
The combat was poorly explained but once you know what you're doing it's easy to work with and fun.
I had to restart when I was 20 hours in because I forgot the instructions. The 2nd game was also more like a lighthearted anime which I think put some people off. It turned out to be my favourite game in the series with bags of content, 233 hours?
3 was excellent, the story and the way it tied all 3 mainline games together was perfect. Technologically it's easily the best, made better with Mclassic too.
I'd really love to play more Xeno games. Wouldn't mind an XCX 2 to make up for the cliffhanger ending.
Love the Xenoblade games and would definitely love to see another one get made. I’d even be down for just XCX getting a spruced up version in the meantime.

I could be wrong, but my memory of it was that it came very late in the Wii's life cycle, by which time I was mostly playing PS3/360 and also that at that time I was intimidated by the length of the game. From there I never dipped my toe in.
Also by that time, I had banked multiple entire series of RPG's into the collection on the premise that maybe I'd get around to them one day (for example I still have all of the Xenosaga games for PS2 still sealed).
No, I still need to get that. Has it ever been on sale? If so then I always seem to miss it. Have been thinking about grabbing it lately though so I may end up getting it sooner rather then later.
I really enjoyed Xenoblade, but got bored with X a little after my mech became airborne (of I recall correctly). I was enjoying Xenoblade2, but got sidetracked playing some other game and never returned. I'd love to play 3, but want to finish (or restart) 2 before I buy the third one.
Strange game, it's like Ghouls and Ghosts with better controls at first. It's a pretty fair game, in difficulty and controls.
What ends up killing you is the time limit, it runs down and kills you more frequently than any other game I've ever played.
The level structure is weird, the stage branches off in any direction, then you go into these mini dungeons and pop out the other side.
It's possible to just traverse through the levels to the next. But I think the aim of the game is to rescue the people frozen in stone littered about each level, but it's hard enough to find them.
It's not a classic.
I hate when I start a JRPG and I'm bombarded with stuff I don't understand to the point that it feels like a chore.
I think it has the standard 33% discount, very rarely though. Wish I'd bought Torna the Golden Country physically.

You can write down simple combos you can use, it's easier than it sounds.
If you try and look at the combo bar in the midst of battle you'll miss the timing because you're too busy thinking about what leads to what.
It's not that the gameplay is too daunting, it's that I'm even struggling to finish Metroid Prime while starting it over a month ago, despite it being a 15 hour game.

Nintendo just shadow dropped their new system! Alarmo. Available for Nintendo Online members today in US and Canada. Has some pre installed game themes in it for the alarm clock settings with more offered as free updates with online connection. Can sense body movements and play sounds accordingly. The coin block sound effect immediately had me thinking of when doing something in bed that didn’t involve sleeping.
