Thank you for the concern Aspro, and the sincerity, but I really don't think that's what he meant, and it's best we don't start anything new.  I know GG appreciates this place as much as anyone, and puts as much into as anyone.  I didn't take it that way.

If you took no offense, then that's okay. Again, if I mis-interpreted the comment, then apology issued. You among anyone else on this site should be treated with the utmost repsect. (Lest we forget our times in the wilderness -- 1UP).

Setting aside all the other stuff ENTIRELY, I find your comment offensive. Yoda is not our code-monkey. We don't order Yoda to do anything, fuck, this site is already a billion times better than any of us deserve to begin with from a technical perspective, all at Yoda's personal expense, both in time and money.

We make suggestions, he implements them if he can or wants to, that's fine with me.  No offense at all intended GG, and I apologize if I mis-interpreted your comments, but I consider Yoda a real mench, and don't appreciate him being shoved around.

I'm with you there, didn't mean anything by it.

I take the view that empowering the user is a good thing and that they should have as much choice as possible, especially when it comes to their own privacy etc. Yoda has always said that the site is influenced by the community and it's wishes as a whole, that's what this suggestion thread is about. You'll see people asking the same features if the same situations keep arising. Yoda has done a great thing here that I appreciate greatly.

Suggestion: A character count-down in the headline section of the News Submittal text box.  "You have XXX characters left".  Kind of like when you use twitter from a PC, or I think I've seen it when you use it to send an SMS via skype.

A lesser suggestion:

Can you move the SHOW TOOLS button from the top right down to the editing section?  That would allow the News columns to be closer to the top of the screen.

suggested location

This is the space we'd get back:

current show tools

Not really a suggestion, more of a question.

Why don't we have comment views on the site? I'm not sure we need them, or that they serve any purpose, but the lack of them makes me think there must be a reason, and I am always interested in your design perspectives.

Same goes for a "poll" option.

No comment views because I avoid database calls whenever possible.  I'm too tired to try to remember what I thought when I thought of polls before.

I find comment views sad anyway.  "What! 20 views and none of you could come up with a comment" is how it usually goes for me.

I'd like to suggest that "moderation" rights be removed from a "power user" who is inactive for 90 days.  Restored upon an additional 1,000 points of activity.

i know all this is done manually currently (so sorry for the request).

EDIT: In thinking about this, forget it. Because they would have to login to do any harm, so therefore would not be "inactive" -- so it would be tricky to implement.  I was concerned about people who are no longer invested in the site being able to ban users or delete posts.

What are your thoughts up up-voting stories in GG Weekly?  Maybe not down votes, but if you like a story, or want it to be promoted you can give it a 1-up?

Split Inbox and Sent folders in mail.  It's still a little wonky, as the select/delete options are there for Sent, but you can't delete someone else's mail.  Also, the messages on the mail page overlap the sidebar.  But I figure is useful enough as is to have it available with the quirks.

Concept: Spots to enter your Xbox Live/PSN name/Wii Codes on your profile page.

Yeah, I'd also like to be able to check box the systems owned too (for the profile page).  Sometimes I lose track of who has what.

This one is directed to the community as well as you Yoda.

(Read the following with the understanding that others also contribute stories).

Geek and Iga used to do all the news.

Then Geek and I did it.

Then I did it.  I do it mostly because no-one else does.

On my week off, it looks like Leo did most of the updates.  It's not sustainable for a single person, or couple of people to do the news.    I think part of Geek's leaving had to at least have been in part the relief of not having to do the news anymore (I know I did not miss it).

My belief is that the News board is a vital part of the site, I mean, the central part.  But if people are not compelled (for the most part) to submit stories, then is it that vital?  I know also in the past you have said that our click-thru is embarrasingly low.  So if people aren't submitting, and they aren't clicking on stories what are we doing here?

I want to keep it, but I also want to figure out how to make it compelling to the visitors we have.

Regrettably I haven't even been pulling my weight on the development side that gives me the excuse for slacking on the news.  It's a cop-out, but I'm having difficulties keeping up with anything really.  Not that there's any good reason, but I'm not so naive as to think I can pick it up all so quickly.

I'll try to get to developing and updating some tools to make it easier to post news.  The GG Weekly Bar Firefox add-on was a start, but it needs updating, and those updates I can apply to other browsers.
