I beat The Creature in the Well over the weekend.  It's a top down action puzzler in which combat and puzzle solving are one and a mixture of pinball and those Ganon fights in Zelda where you hit a ball of energy back and forth.  It's a clever concept with a satisfying tactility to it all.  It's nice to master a unique gameplay system for once and I enjoyed getting to grips with it.  Each room is a puzzle with a combination of 'bumpers' to clear, with things being shaken up by bumpers that have timers, linking together in intricate patterns, bumpers that shoot damaging balls of energy at you, bumpers that will create a blast radius when hit, ...  After a while some rooms start to be repeated, but it's enjoyable enough for that not to matter.

In each 'dungeon', of which there are 9, you will also face off against 'the Creature', eyes peering up at you from the abyss, 2 skeletal arms reaching up to where you are standing.  You never confront her directly, but rather she will have set up a few levels of harsh puzzles to solve while she bombards you with homing balls of energy of her own.

The difficulty really ramps up 2/3s into the game.  Prior to that point I had died a total of 2 times, while I easily died 10 times or more during the last 3 dungeons.  The puzzle segments seemed to get easier, but the battles with the Creature became incredibly testing, with so much going on that the only way to succeed was by pure luck or by relying on your senses to carry you through.

There's a story about an eternal sandstorm ravaging the earth and a machine to counter it having been built in a mountain in which the Creature resides, who sabotized everything untill people gave up.  It's really a bare bones story, the ending also leaving a lot to be desired.  But to focus too much on the story would be to miss the point of the game.

I'm guessing the game is about 6-8 hours long, which is to me the ideal length for something like this.  Enjoyable, unique game, let down by frustrating difficulty spikes and an undercooked story.  -  7/10

I completed Telltale's second Batman game.  It's quite good and I enjoyed the alternate timeline though it's a little weird.  Through the two seasons, I've enjoyed how it's changed the Batman formula in unexpected ways.  I think the writing is better in this game as we move to the origins of the Joker.

They're back as publisher. Wolfamongus 2 is being partly made by former Telltale devs and published by Telltale 2.0.

I beat The Last of Us 1 Remastered and its DLC and The Last of Us 2 bake to bake to bake.

Last of Us 2 is really good, the people who like the first games gameplay and then dislike 2 are crazy people. In all the ways that I give a shit the gameplay is much better in TLOU2. The combat spaces are wide, have more vertical layers, a good chunk can be ghosted so stealth is more of a real option (still wack), and aggressive playstyle has fun options. Dogs are a nice addition to those predator arenas as well, tho I had to go against my nature and had to kill the puppies ;_;

All the set pieces n boss fight segments are hot garbage. Pretty, but garbage. Rat King is okay I guess, and I almost want to like the Haven set piece, but the Haven encounters are so good, so I don't feel as bad about dunking on Haven's dumb ass set piece moment.

Story has some problems, but I appreciate its goals. I want to like it mroe than I actually do.

Going back to TLOU1, I definitely cooled off on the quality of its gameplay, but it's still a solid 7/10 for me. Last of Us 2 is about that, if a tier higher. But definitely better than the first. It's just among my favorite action titles it isn't in that convo, and if anything the game really makes me want Naughty Dog to make an actual stealth game, with options n shit. Their arena designs are clean, and I want something in a world where I only have Hitman left. Ubisoft won't return my calls about Splinter Cell : (

Sounds worth checking out at the least, but given that 5 hours of the 15 hours of the original was tutorial, 5 hours was middling at best, and then 5 hours were legit, I'm a bit worried about it being even longer.

Also, does it improve in similar ways to how you found UC4 to have improved? Cause I could find nothing redeemable about UC4.

I would argue having replayed TLOU1, that UC4's spaces are absolutely an improvement, let down by less interesting mecahnics. Having some vertical layers to all this bush stealth that the modern All-game is going to have adds some fun hit n run options. And The Last of us adds that to a system that has a fucking health bar, guns that have a sway and don't always have a lot of ammo (you can't just spray n pray, gotta at least be honest with your shots), and other resources that cost some form of crafting currency be it molotovs, trap bombs, a suppressor for your pistol, smoke bombs, or pick up-ables like the bottles n bricks, which in turn also add a noise maker, which Uncharted doesn't really have.

My biggest concern going into this game was that it would be paced like Uncharted 4 where you would spend HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOURS just fucking doing nothing in between the only part of the gameplay that has a modicum of depth (its still shallow, but fuck its more interesting than climbing), but to the games credit most of the just putzing around is usually exploring areas that are leading to actual combat arenas. It still has a bad habit of tutorializing shit, but the game really lets you loose a bit more for hours of fun arenas. Some could be better than others, infected areas seem maybe the most simplistic to try to make the stealth work, but the stealth isn't good enough on its own to be worth a fuck.

It is definitely longer, especially on Survivor. And given that you are going to care about narrative shit..............some of it is very odd pacing wise to say the least lol

I don't know I'm glad the PS4 got it's third exclusive worth a spin. It only took like 7 years and a whole bunch of mid games.

I am at least curious what your knocks against the combat arenas in UC4 would be tho.

Yeah, i can actually see the area design of UC4 working in something with decent mechanics. My issue with it in UC4 was that because shooting people and shit wasn't actually that fun, it just made the shooting areas feel bigger and longer, rather than more interesting lol. The one exception to that was the convoluted jungle area where you could jump between areas at speed with several more compact areas of enemies that had multiple entry points etc.

What are the other exclusives? Bloodborne is one, I assume.

The Trials of Mana remake is all done. Really fun piece of nostalgia that changed just enough up for modern tastes. And since it clocks in right at 20 hours it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Probably will give it one last go in another month or so just so I can play through the game one more time with one of the two remaining characters that I never used as a main character before.

Since I'm still no PC Life for now.

I beat God of War 3: The game having more of an enemy roster, more straight forward gameplay and less walking, and an actual air game makes it more viable for multiple spins. This time I bothered to explore grab concepts a bit more, having abilities tied to a magic meter is way the fuck better than cool downs. That said, eh as enjoyable as the combat is on a primal level, it's outclassed by Japanese action games. I'll still take it over most things the western end of game development makes, but as much as I don't agree with the absurd praise around Dad of War, I am probably more disgusted by the reverence that the God of War games had at the time and especially Kratos. He fucking suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. Still tho fun game. The boss fights suck tho. Like outside of Zeus, all of them are wack. Poseidon is brain dead and only enjoyable for the spectacle. Hercules n Hades are pretty basic bitch fights. And the rest are garbage. Zeus is probably only a tier above basic bitch, but a far cry from being in the same conversation as Nelo Angelo, Credo, Vergil, Jeanne, Genshin, or any God Hand boss.

Again good game, about a 7/10. But fuck being up to snuff with Devil May Cry 3 and its ilk, I wouldn't put any of the God of War games over DMC1.

I also beat Marvel's Spiderman. It's a reasonable upgrade over Batman combat. It adds some much needed tools to his roster. Your equipment is way too strong, and trivializes a lot of fights, and not enough of it can be used for a creative combo route. So I ended up not using that stuff to make the game funner, enemy roster n combat has a bad habit of falling into arkham/mordor traps of silver bullet design, and fuck any mary jane n miles segment. WHo...........fuck off. The actual spiderman stealth is I would argue a downgrade from Arkham games, which lets be real weren't exactly Metal Gear or more appropriately Hitman to begin with. Not big on the bosses, but I found the Vulture+Electro segment cute. Story wise its a solid spiderman yarn, I like that they play it straight and don't try to pretend the people playing the game don't know who Doctor Octopus is. The ending is a reasonable gut punch for cape shit. I'm not a spiderman fan, I thought the cartoon was wack as a kid lol, so what little extra praise I give batman games for having well Kevin Conroy ass Batman isn't a luxury Spiderman benefits from. But I think it's a much better game ass game than the Arkham games ever are. It needs some challenge rooms tho. Oh and the open world shit, smh. 6/10

since I'm on a 4 game Sony first party kick, might as well make it 5 in a row with The Last Guardian and beat it this time.

Two of them were the same game, Persona 5.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)
