I beat DA GOAT and the remake of the DA GOAT. It's not as good, but i mean no game is as good as Resident Evil 4, still pretty good in its own right. I detest what they did to how stuns work, or how this mother fucker moves, or a lot of the animations in this game, but I like the econ and the ramped up challenge. Why is it that after RE4, the worthwhile Resident Evil games are the remakes of 2 and 4? Why can't Capcom make a banger out of one of their new ideas. I'm still upset about how shitty Village is.

Final Fantasy V is completed. Much quicker than I remembered, but that seems to be true if all the 16 bit FF games.

This is also the third translation of the game I've played. First time was with a printed out English guide to help me get through the Japanese SFC cartridge I was played. Then about 10 years later I played the GBA game. And this time it's the fan translation of the original SFC game. It's interesting going through the game and seeing how different segments have wildly different translations from one another.

Just finished what is probably the creepiest and most unsettling game within a game within a game within a game...

Just finished my first playthrough of Resident Evil 4 Remake and damn, what a fantastic game. Definitely my GotY so far. Looking forward to playing through again on Professional mode. Also really looking forward to Mercenaries mode when that comes out next week. 10/10

beat Resident Evil 5 last night with a buddy. That game is a 360 ass game. 3 fucking sections with a turret, a hammer of dawn segment, cover shooting segment, this goofy ass lift thats spinning while you take shots, a parade of quick time events. The game screams creatively bankrupt.

I lasted about 5 minutes into Resident Evil 5. Maybe a little bit longer. I think I got the first trophy that was pretty much awarded to anyone who makes it past the title screen. That game did not click with me from the very start.

Trials of Mana is in the books (again). This time around I played with doing three characters I did not use for the first run back when I initially got the game. So now I've seen the endings for everyone on both versions of the game. Go me.

I still need to tackle the post game content, so I'll take a short break, and maybe tomorrow night mess with that. At the very least, I'm curious to open up the new class changes that they created for this game.

I beat OG Dead Space. It's both less trashy than Resident Evil 5, but also not as good as Resident Evil 5.

I beat the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.  The GBC version on Switch.  A very enjoyable game, although there are some design sensibilities that show it's a game from 1993.  Bombable walls that aren't visible in any way, but that are required to progress through dungeons being the most notable.  The bosses were a weak point, often not putting up much of a fight at all.  8/10

Resident Evil 2 has been completed with the true ending and it was excellent. Without question that was definitely one of the best games of the generation.

Now the question is do I bother with Resident Evil 3? I know that one wasn't considered quite as popular, so it seems like the biggest complaint was it's short length. Oh well, that's a question for later in the year. I have a couple other games to get to first.

I beat Dead Space 2. That game bangs.

I also beat the Dead Space Remake. That game is fundamentally inferior to its original counterpart. Ammo econ is out of wack, the lack of node doors and no more empty node slots on the upgrade paths means you get juiced weapons and armor even quicker, the weapons themselves have been overtuned in a franchise that already has overly strong weapons, and above all else they defanged the necromorphs a bunch. On top of doing less damage per hit, they straight up won't swing at you for a good while. I have seen them just run up and go idle on hard mode, don't do anything, they almost never do their slasher flurry rush attack, the distances from which they would attack from in the older dead space games has shrunk by a significant margin. Makes the game a complete pushover till the like twitcher enemies come in.

Everything you described is pretty great, loss of variety. Still has all the excellent RE4 level gameplay. Yeah turret stuff is a bit meh, clearly that's a step down. Compared to other coop games nothing comes close. You have sections in a swamp riding a boat, being attacked by gators and tribe people. When the swarms come it's as fun as RE4, just not as tightly designed.

still The best coop shooter of all time to me and just a kind of lesser RE4, but still a lot of RE4 in there.

It's a really weird game, super linear heavy scripted 6 hour game. Nothing like RE2 and its level design. It's still a fun game, a wild roller coaster but doesn't really capture what made RE3 work.

Jedi Suvivor review is going up, my favorite Star Wars game since KOTOR, it's absolutely incredible. Sadly it's got bugs, those never really bother me but it's there and annoying. Combat is mostly the same as the last game, some improvements, if only this game has GoW level combat it might be a 10 for me. The level design, pacing, side quests, absolutely brilliant, it's Arkham level great.

I was truly intent on finishing it, but I have not enjoyed a game as little as I have Blinx the Time Sweeper since I was a child. So maybe I will, maybe I won't.

All those segments are hot garbage. We really gonna stan for a turret out here. Having a boss that stands there while i charge up a laser from space is sleep. Cover shooters by nature are suspect, even more so when its in Resi's system. Left 4 Dead is a coop game from that year, and it has more engaging scenarios consistently, bonus points because it also has a killer pvp that's played to this day. Healing requires you to be vulnerable, the melee only gives you so much pushback, and the sheer overwhelming amount of enemies means one cat just can't run off bodying. Flip side RE5 consistently chickens out of ever challenging the two players in any sort of interesting way, the oil rig area has two chainsaw guys. One would think this scenario makes sense for a 2v2 battle against the coop bois, but nah. They spawn individually as a trigger point. And since they aggro to only one of you, all it means is one cat is running, while the other one is laying down fire. Straight push over, no enemies. No nothing. In Left 4 Dead? Tanks up? Cool, also you're probably dealing with zombies if its the last part of the level. Dealing with zombies? Cool you're also dealing with hunters, smokers, boomers, etc.

Systems wise it might have more going on individually than other shooters that have coop, but nothing about those systems is really elevating my coop experience that isn't just "i like my friend, so of course we had a good time". But you'd still be dealing with a campaign with a lot of sub par sections and bad pacing.

Other games have more interesting ballistics, about the only thing I'd say the game does that is at least an improvement over its predecessor is real time weapon switching, and the quick reload you can do from the menu without ever having to sit through a reload animation. Pretty sick in mercs.

That take is bad too, but also I know you probably played with Aarny. So I'm willing to blame the Irish for your take, and not Australia this time. I'm going to write it off as you've never played Left 4 Dead.

I don't agree. I never played L4D fully but enough to get the jist, it's pretty one note and the enemy variety isn't great. Now they all serve their own purpose as you describe but it's limited. There are no real bosses in those games. I much rather play the game with lots of variety, bosses, varied levels with puzzle like elements to them too. That oil rig, have you ever sped run it in coop, the two players need to be in sync and having to dodge and manipulate the chainsaw guys on their own. From a huge swamp to explore with gators and optional areas to fight through to an underground temple with moving parts and a giant bat boss. The game is as non stop as RE4 and the mechanics are still about the same if not better with the better melee attacks, I much rather play the RE4 style than a run and gun L4D spray bullets kind of game. That's preference though.
