Are You Enjoying the Halloween Season? What Kind of Halloween Related Media Do You Love?
I've decided to watch horror movies in October because Aaron Mullan/Aarny's always doing it. It's been an interesting experience. I've mostly just rewatched movies though. So far I've watched Dracula: Dead and Loving It (previously unwatched), Parents (also unwatched), the three original Evil Dead movies, The Return of the Living Dead parts 1 and 2, Neon Maniacs, Cabin Fever (ridiculous in a good way), Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, The House of the Devil and the first two Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I still have to watch Halloween Ends (should have watched it on the 1st) and Black Christmas (which I intend to watch on Halloween, as I watch Halloween every Christmas).
I played the game Visage last year too. I enjoyed that one, mostly.

We're kind of a year-round Halloween house. We've got a couple rooms in our home that are specifically decorated with Halloween and horror themes in mind. It's really kind of more my wife than me, but I still appreciate it. But when October comes around it is definitely an overdrive.
Additionally this time of year we pretty much do seasonal events all month long, and by the time November rolls around I'm just exhausted. Last night we watched House on Haunted Hill (the original) at an outdoor movies in the Park event at a neighboring town. Earlier in the week we went to the theaters to see the 20th anniversary of House of 1000 Corpses. And last week we saw the 50th anniversary screening of The Exorcist.
I can put together a list of other good movies that should be watched this time of year, but I'll start out by saying if you didn't see AMC's Interview With a Vampire series, yeah absolutely have to. Probably the best TV series I've watched in a long time, and while they took a couple liberties with the book, everything worked perfectly. Every change was actually an improvement I think.

That reminds me, I do have a Halloween movie I have to recommend to at least some of you. Travo, Raven, and maybe Leo I think would appreciate it. Everyone else might either be a little too young or have a United States upbringing that might make it more difficult to appreciate the movie.
Basically, you needed to have I've been around in the mid to late 80s and had access to a local UHF television station.
The movie is called WNUF's Halloween Special, and it is one of the best takes on the found footage concept I've ever seen. The movie tries to pass itself off as someone's VHS recording of a local TV stations Halloween's special. This particular television special was a local news station's expose on a local haunted house, with a few special guests and even some spiritual mediums who are going to try and contact the former residence from the afterlife.
What makes it really impressive though is how accurate it feels. If you had told me that this was something that really happened around 1987, while the satanic panic was still riding high in this country, I would have totally bought in. They even created dozens of commercials that you would see on a local TV station. Spots for local carpet companies, announcements for a town fair, and promotions for low budget syndicated sitcoms and cheesy sci-fi shows that stations like this would air on weekends. You'll laugh at a lot of the things you see, but not because it's done for laughs. With the exception of a couple of the news broadcasters, everything is played completely straight, and you can't help but think, "yeah everything really was this awful on these kind of TV stations."
Anyway, I encourage everyone to watch it, and if nothing else view it as a Time capsule. But if you lived through a similar experience you're going to have a much different reaction as you watch it. The whole thing is all of 90 minutes, so it's a good bit of filler to kill a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

About mid September I get into the mood to watch Halloween movies and I usually stop that right on November 1st. Columbia finally held its first horror convention last month, but I wasn't aware of it till too late and did not get to attend.
