So, what are you guys grooving to of late? Any old favorites find their way back into rotation? Anything new? Here's a quick rundown of my top CD's right now:

  • Dream Theater: Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Just picked this up. Been a DT fan since Images and Words, and I think this is the best CD they've done in 10 years, since Metropolis. The last few were OK, but imo lacked the feeling & songwriting of the old stuff....like they were just going through the motions as bands tend to do when they've been around for awhile. This CD is full of great songs and heartfelt playing. Also some great cover songs like Iron Maiden's "To Tame a Land". 9/10

  • GoatWhore: Funeral Dirge For The Rotting Sun

Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun cover (Click to see larger picture)

This is an interesting black metal CD by an American band (normally black metal comes out of northern Europe) and its a solid effort with raw yet well done production and good songs. This was Goatwhore's 2nd CD. Their newer stuff is more in the vein of thrash metal like Slayer mixed with Pantera. Great band, and the singer has a powerful voice (he's also from Soilent Green, though I think Goatwhore is the better band). 7/10

  • Fear Factory: Mechanize

Fear Factory - Mechanize

The new CD from FF, and much like Dream Theater, this is the best and most inspired FF album in 10 years, probably due to the return of their original guitarist. Like usual for FF, the production values are crushing...listening to this on a great stereo is like going to war. Everything is clean as a whistle and very heavy. Strapping Young Lad bassist Byron Stroud and drummer Gene Hoglan are now in the band, and they make FF sound just as good if not better than they did in the mid 90's. Great CD. 9/10

Feels good to hear breezy latin jazz and the sun.

Carcass: Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious.

From their gore-splattered grindcore beginnings with Reek... to their watered down thrash demise in Swansong, I find Carcass to be at the very top of the game in this album. Here they retain most of the brutality of their first two records, while showing off a set of impressive instrumental skills and technical prowess that would be their trademark on what was to become their breakthrough album, Heartwork.

If I had to choose only one album from this band, it would be this one. No questions asked.

Sodom: Persecution Mania.

With a career spanning almost 30 years, and countless albums with a mixture of thrash/black metal sound, this is still the most enjoyable of them. Raw sounding, remarkably groovy and with a plethora of aural treats courtesy of Frank Blackfire, this one is a piece of thrash history.

This is what I'm currently listening to. I'm a bit out of the loop on new releases/bands, so I withdrew again to a retro mood, reminiscent of simpler, carefree times.

My favourite album, at the least

Go! Younha

Normally one or two songs stand out to me, but this easily has half a dozen I love.

The best thing to do is pull up next to some grannies and crank "1000 miles of cock" by Zimmer's Hole!

I've loved metal since I was a kid, my brother who's older than me got me into it and since he's a great guitar player I got to see the skill behind the music that most people don't realize. Its always been a great way to blow off steam, and when it comes to heaviness and brutality you can't beat a good metal band, especially as a live show. I listen to all kinds of music, but metal is definitely my #1 love.

Yup. She says nothing though, because of fear of me transmutating into a raging norse god, with fire coming out of my eyes and ass, and thunder and lightning coming out of my groins and armpits. LOL

I kinda hoped that some of my exquisite musical taste would pass onto my kids, but alas, that was not meant to be. My eldest one lives and breathes Justin Bieber, and the little one is an unrepentant Lady Gaga junkie.

Yeah no matter how good our music is, they naturally gravitate to crap it seems.  The older one loves Miley Cyrus and some other crap.  I think she's starting to like Kei$ha so help me god.  And the little one likes Lady Gaga and the Ting Tings (that's an actual band, not a kid's group). Fortunately he at least has some rather eclectic tastes. He'll sing along to Puddle of Mud and Rammstein (which is utterly hilarious), and now really seems to enjoy the Theme to Shaft.

As far as my own tastes, these days I'm listening to this guy, though I'm not entirely sure why. Guess it's the closest thing we have to the Clash these days:

That is definitely what you should try to build upon.  Great potential there.  Much better than metal.  Try the soundtrack to Superfly (Curtis Mayfield) next.  Kid's got the soul!!!
