i think there are six bank holidays around the year in the UK. always on the monday so people can have a longish weekend.
over here if a holiday falls on saturday or sunday it is just lost

Yeah, for an outsider the obsession the TV news (and thus the population) has with a war against the Turks 100 years ago is a bit perplexing. It's non-stop for about 2 months.

All those seem to match the US laws (except for the required holiday pay -- there is no requirement in the US, and the 40 hours). I should say that upon reflection, I thin ktoward the end of my career I was getting 4 or 6 weeks of paid vacation -- but since I never took it I am fuzzy on the details. I do know that it accrued year by year though, so when I left it was a hefty amount.

Yeah. Okay, good, so I'm not imagining it. Weird. Sometimes when you are a foreigner you don't know if you are over-perceiving some things.
And I have 5 weeks of paid vacation per year that I intend to use at the end of the month! Here I am Finland!

After one week of holiday in the south of france (35 degrees on average) with friends, it will be a nice change. See you in 2 weeks! And have fun

This time you went too far. 
Tell me about one national holiday in your country that is unique to your country. I think that would tell me a bit more about your part of the world.
Also, if you want, I'd be interested in what standard vacation pay allocations are like in your land. In the US, I used to get 2 weeks of paid vacation a year (though for 13 years I never took more than 4 days off at a time). That was considered normal among the people I knew. There were also 7 national holidays that were observed.
Here in Australia Mrs. Aspro gets 5 weeks paid vacation plus 1 week paid personal leave and then there are more national holidays here as well. She is told that is fairly normal (though being from the states we are shocked at how much time off that is).
