Beyond Hollywood review No 2 of

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen

"Lau’s direction is as slick as ever, and the film is very much in the blockbuster mould, with lots of effort having been put into the sets and costumes. The period detail pays off in creating a convincingly exotic 1920s atmosphere, with lots of nightclub scenes and dance numbers. Although the film does suffer from some odd pacing at times and some choppy editing, including a very abrupt ending, when it takes off, it really flies. This is thanks mainly to Yen’s excellent and inventive action choreography, which includes some well designed and explosive set pieces. Things get pretty violent and bloody in places, and aside from a few instances of shoddy CGI work this furthers the film’s tough and gritty air, adding a welcome sense of visceral danger. There are a number of real stand out scenes that rank amongst the year’s best for the genre, with the final act containing some truly awesome sequences as Yen takes on a massive mob of Japanese thugs (apparently around 150) before facing down the evil Chikaraishi in a duel that is well worth the wait.

All of this combines to make “Legend of The Fist – The Return of Chen Zhen” not only a worthy follow up to the classic originals, but a fine piece of martial arts cinema in its own right. Donnie Yen continues to prove why he is still the top genre star of the new century, and the film is another thrilling notch on his ever expanding belt."

Out to buy already from region 3 - yesasia.com or playasia.com, region 2 is out on the 31st January 2011

'A Team' director - 'We blew it'

'The A-Team' director Joe Carnahan has admitted he "blew it" with the much-maligned big screen reboot of the cherished '80s TV show.

Carnahan helmed the recent blockbuster, which starred Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson and Sharlto Copley.

However, it was mauled by critics and took just over £50 million in the US, despite an estimated budget of over £70 million.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Carnahan conceded: "If I had a nickel for every time someone, especially women, came up to me and said they were dragged to the film but ended up liking it. That's how you know you blew it. And we blew it... We kind of fell victim to a marketing misstep in that there wasn't necessarily an understanding of what the show was. We didn't do an adequate enough job of telling people what the movie was, if you know what I mean."

The 'Smokin' Aces' director also revealed that he is not working on the sequel at the moment, and any chances of a follow-up hinge on DVD sales.

"Hopefully, we can make it up and find the audience the film should have found during the summer on Blu-ray and DVD. Fingers crossed... I think a large degree of it depends on how it does in this realm."

The A*Team completely fucked up because they clearly didn't pay attention to the TV show. The fact that they gave so much camera time to Face proved that.  No one liked Face on the TV show. He was ALWAYS the odd man out. Everyone else got to do cool shit.... and he was just kind of there.  For the movie, they decided to make him the central character.  WTF???  Glad it failed.

It's on my rental list, but what put me off the film was firstly Face's casting, he is supposed to be this well manicured man, not some hairy dude with a six pack. The trailers were all over the place and didn't convey any sort of story narrative there. And really all they had to do was play the fucking theme tune over the trailer to some great looking action. Instead you got Jessica Biel and a bad CGI tank flying in mid-air.

LET THE BULLETS FLY Review

"How refreshing it was, to experience Jiang Wen's new holiday blockbuster, LET THE BULLETS FLY, a rip-roaring comedy thriller committed to delivering smart dialogue through great performances and almost entirely free of any underlying political agenda. This is a  sure-fire holiday hit that should impress domestic audiences and hopefully find some strong support on the international circuit."

Coming From Studio Ghibli In 2011: Goro Miyazaki's KOKURIKU-ZAKA KARA

It can't be easy being Goro Miyazaki. The son of one of the most revered animators of all time - Spirited Away's Hayao Miyzaki - the level of expectation and pressure placed on Goro with his 2006 debut, Tales From Earthsea, was simply incredible.

Fans saw the famous name and expected results on a par with his father's peak work. Earthsea author was openly critical of the adaptation of her work. Goro even came under fire from his own father, with Hayao openly questioning and criticizing his son's decision to make films in the Japanese press.

No surprise, then, that people view Tales From Earthsea somewhat askew and have criticized it to a level that I don't believe is fair. No, Goro is not working on Hayao's level but neither was Hayao with his first feature and the film is significantly better than some of the press would lead you to believe.

Well, now we get to see what Goro learned from the experience the first time out and how he can perform without all of those rookie pressures. Studio Ghibli have just announced that their 2011 feature film release will be Kokuriku-zaka Kara, an adaptation of a manga by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama. Though I'm not familiar with the source work it sounds very much like a slice-of-life style project following a high school girl in 1963 Yokohama.

Whatever bad blood there may have been between the Miyazakis over Tales From Earthsea - and there certainly seemed to be some, given some of the things Hayao was saying in the press - appears to be behind the pair now as Hayao is reportedly collaborating on the script for this one. Production is reportedly somewhat behind schedule so the proposed summer 2011 release date may yet be moved.

I know nothing about A Team but I enjoyed the movie as an insane over the top action film.
