USA beat Algeria to qualify first!  Only one nil but it should have been three or four.

England beat Slovenia to qualify as second.  Hopefully they'll play the Germans in the next round.  Woot!!

Go USA!! So well deserved

I'm so fuckin emotional right now I'm almost in tears.  This is why this is the greatest game in the world.  Even though Steel rightly said not to bother with the heathens anymore ... I'll try one last time.

The game was nil - nil for over ninety minutes.  A result which would have seen the US drop out of the group stages.  Nil - nil = boring I hear you say.  Wrong! And in this instance very stupid thing to say.  The US created chance after chance and had another perfectly fine goal disallowed.  Nerve-wracking stuff.  Nail-biting.  But they pressed on and on and on.  Slovenia wasn't going to do them any favours in the other game as they were "lying back and thinking of England".  They had to do it themselves.

The goal came in the 92nd minute of play.  The 2nd of 4 minutes of extra time.  Jubilation.  One moment changes everything.  From misery to jubilation.  This is why football is the greatest game.

Once again.  Well done Team USA.

I got to admit I thought the US was going to get robbed of a goal for a second time. If that was the case I was going to demand the US team boycott next year unless they included video replay for disputed calls.

I may start to watch now.  Finally getting to the matches where it truly does get interesting.  However, I'll also be playing the PSP or DSi since watching soccer is still dumb.

Buddy there's no next year LOL  It's only once every four years that's why it's such a big occasion Nyaa

The US did get robbed of a goal for the second time, I think you meant you thought they were going to get robbed of a win.  They also should have had a penalty (and the Algerian sent off) when Clint Dempsey got punched in the face.  It was lucky for the referee those were moot points in the end but he could easily have sent the best team in the group out.

That's what I meant. I know the timetable.

And I was talking about that first goal in today's game that they got robbed of. If that second goal hadn't been scored we would have had yet another time and pretty been screwed over. ANd we've boycotted an Olympics before, we could boycott a World Cup.

And in an interesting bit of "Robio Trivia," the soccer coach at my highschool was on the 1980 US Olympic team that ended up not getting to play because of the boycott.  And now you know.

That was INCREDIBLE, WOW!!! There is pandemonium in the streets, everyone is celebrating!!!

Ok I'm just messing with you, no one gives a shit. Nyaa

Actually that was pretty dramatic. Now it should get far more interesting with the knockout stage, I may watch it. The World Cup is getting a lot of coverage and many people are talking about it, more than usual.

 LOL

You may or you may not know this but the biggest number of traveling fans in South Africa right now are from the US.  This may just mean they are the ones with the most disposable income, but it also means there are enough US people who care...  And it will only get bigger

World Cup is getting more popular. The first US game actually had higher ratings than any of the first rounds of the NBA playoff games. . . probably from all the illegal aliens that are watching it.

Fuck Serbia played stupid again, why the hell are they playing like a draw would do them any good? You play like that and the other team is going to score against you,  but then you suddenly start pushing to score?! Should have tried that from the beginning. Australia, did good by not panicking and scoring while Serbia was more dominant. After that Serbia kinda lost it.

Like I said in the beginning I hate this new defending Serbian play. In the old times Serbia/Yugoslavia was known for its attractive attacking football. they were even called Brazil from Europe once. Sure they did not win anything, but they are not winning now either, but at least they use to look good. Now they have nothing. And is Vidic not supposed to be one of the best defenders? He sucks, even dodging the ball that lead to the second goal. You are a defender, you have to block the ball.

I am worried about Ghana. They play very nice, but they just can't score. The scored twice and both times from penalties. This does not bode well for them.

Question.

Assuming Australia was screwed (by that official) in their game against Ghana, and that penalty kick awarded to Ghana did not result in a goal, would they still be going home after today's win against Serbia?

And legal aliens.  I think they big deal this time around was the backing ESPN was giving it.

I think Vidic's performance this world cup is very suspect.  In fact i'm pretty sure he threw at least some of those results.  I can't get that idiotic handball from the game with Germany out of my head.  Very very suspect.

Germany play England.  AGAIN!  Everyone's seen this before.  Germany wins on penalties everytime Nyaa

No.

So they'd still be around? Bummer.

What killed the Aussies was their poor performance against Germany. With today's win, they could have advanced to knockout stage, but it was Ghana instead because of their better goal differential.
