80 days is a text based choose your own adventure game based on the Jules Verne novel Around the World in 80 Days. Your mission as you can guess is to get around the world in 80 days. You play as the butler for Phileas Fogg and are in charge of the funds and how to travel. Basically your goal is to make sure you get around the world fast enough and to do so you need to buy items in some cities and sell high in others. You must also manage Fogg's health which can be helped by buying certain items like a winter coat in cold locations. At each city you have a small menu where you can enter a market, a bank, explore, travel or sleep. A timer is always running, certain modes of transports leave at specific days so maybe that train you want leaves in two days, well in some situations you maybe able to bribe someone to leave early but at the cost of your funds. The balance between funds and time is the key to the entire experience. As you travel the story unfolds and you get to choose how it plays out. Most of the time you get two or three options as to how a situation unfolds. For instance you can explore a dock or a coffe shop, depending on where you go you will meet someone different, get into a new situation. Sometimes scenarios leads to new routes, others maybe a gamble where you maybe able to earn money. Most of the time it leads to nothing but colorful info of the game world. At first I felt the story was near non existent but as you play the sheer volume of potential adventures is staggering. On my two journies I have been a part of a mutiny, been the lead suspect in a murder mystery, boxed a world champion boxer, and been a part of a revolution. All of this takes place in text so it's like a choose your own adventure book. Many times the outcomes of these scenarios can alter your trip, for instance once I tried to sneak my way onto a military train but was caught and thrown out at the wrong city. You never know what twists and turns the story will have and this keeps every play through exciting. It's not the most compelling game, it's mostly an interactive novel but it is a near perfect phone game. You can easily pick up and play at any time. It doesn't require complex button inputs. One trip can take 2 to 3 hours and replayability is high. If any of the above sounds interesting to you I would recommend it, for $3 you can't go wrong. |
