#12. Mother 3

In 2010 I read a Destructoid piece about the top 50 games of the decade and the writer insisted that Mother 3 was a top 5 game. I assumed it was just a cheap ploy to throw a controversial choice into the list, but a year or so later I played it.... and he was entirely justified. Mother 3 is one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played. The story is brilliant. It's funny, but never as meaninglessly bizarre as it's predecessor Earthbound. At the same time, it's surprisingly mature. Lots of issues regarding loss, death, and the question of what is happiness. Themes that normally I shake my head it or completely go over my head, but somehow it really managed to connect with me. Plus you throw in one of the cooler time/rhythm based attack gimmicks into the usual turn-based battles and you've got a game that stands a lot higher above most games in its genre.

Nintendo should just release these Earthbound/Mother games on the eShop. I'd buy them just to see what all the fuss is about.

Robio did you play the fan-translation ROM of Mother3?

By the way I'm really enjoying the list so far.  The main reason I read TOP so and so lists is not to see whether I agree or not but to look for things I don't know about, or haven't experienced first hand yet.  So an educational list, is a good list for me.

Yes I played the fan translation. It's amazing how good of a job those guys did. I've played a lot of fan translated games before, and very few have done that good of a job. In fact, given how well they translated the jokes, which is never easy to do, I'd actually say these guys probably did a better job than anyone has ever done.

Agreed. At least put Earthbound on the VC. Their refusal to do so just boggles my mind. What the fuck Nintendo? Seriously. WHAT THE FUCK!? I really don't understand. They're pissing me off. God this makes me so furious. Rage building. ARRRRRRRRRG!!!

It's very strange why Nintendo is holding back. Mother 1 for the NES was actually fully translated into English by NOA, but the plug was pulled at the last minute to focus more on the soon to be released SNES (guess we can blame Howard for that one). And the Mother 3 translation project is so good that Nintendo could probably just throw the fan translation team a few bucks and just take their work. Hell, if they wanted to be dicks I'm pretty sure legally they could just take their work and not even pay them a dime. And of course Earthbound i just sitting there. It's things like that, that really make me wonder what the fuck is wrong with the guys at Nintendo's corporate.

#11. Heroes of Might & Magic III

Heroes of Might and Magic III is the only turn-based strategy game that anyone will ever need. Even this game's own sequel, many of which have been very good, haven't come close to surpassing how perfectly balanced this one was in terms of creature and kingdom strength. While there is an overarching story that you can play through, that's not the reason for this game. This is all about enjoying the individual stand-alone campaigns. The wealth of options on what and how to play are tremendous. Play vs. everyone, every man for himself, team co-op. . .  sometimes your quest will require you to be the last man standing, sometimes you need to find a relic buring somewhere on the map.... sometimes you just have to find a way not to die and lose all your kingdoms. It's fantastic strategy fun, and placed in an amazing world that touches nearly every corner of the high-fantasy genre. Be warned though, this is a dangerously addictive game. Despite having completed everything this game has to offer, every couple years I find myself going back to it, and for about a 2 to 3 month period this game will be the only thing I play. It's just that good.

From this point on the list is going to be a lot more mainstream. Everything in the top 10 was very highly reviewed and sold a pretty substancial number.  It'll still be my personal preferences so it won't be all the usual games, but there won't be as many, "I've never even heard of that" moments.

#10. SimCity

Ahhhh SimCity. . .  How many cities did I build and then watch slowly descend into ruin due to poor choices in laying out a highway system? How many cities did I build with perfectly laid out street designs only to watch it all get completely fucked up by tornados and giant monsters? Few games ever gave me the level of satisfaction that this one did. Making a giant functioning city that continues to thrive year after year creates such a feeling of pride. Of course watching that city fall apart due to natural disasters is maddening in a way that few games can replicate, but that's why the game is so great. Just as remarkable, this is one of the first times that a PC game was recreated well for a console (SNES). Later installments of the game have been great and improved on many features, but none of them have quite caught that magic of the original. Here's to hoping the upcoming PC version will.

it should still be interesting because you're actually including old games which is another area where these lists generally fall short.

#9. Super Mario World

This game is far more than the greatest Mario game of all time. It's the greatest 2-D platformer ever made. Though I don't know if it should make me sad or if I should marvel in the fact that in the last 20 years we've never had a platformer that's better than Super Mario World.  Regardless this game is the measuring stick for all others in the genre. It has creative level design, just the right amount of difficulty progression, catchy music, dinosaurs, and a Special World that truly felt special! Without question though the best part of all of it. . . the secret levels. God they were so much fun to find. You knew they were there.... but where the hell was the secret exit that would reveal them? And where would they take you? Would it reveal a path to Star Road or would it open up a new path like the Butter Bridge?  So many amazing things, and such an amazing game.

#8. Chrono Trigger

For 10 years Chrono Trigger was the the king of the jRPG genre. Not only that, but it was the top game when the genre was in its prime. It was made my video game gods, and it shows in every way. The story, the music, the art design, even the innovations in gameplay... it was all fucking amazing. I could gush over this game forever. The first time I completed it I immediately started up for a second gameplay... and then a third...and more. Getting all of those different endings became an obsession, and by god I followed through. The game was unlike any other RPG I'd ever seen, read about, or heard of. It's legendary, and will remain that way forever.

Yup I did the very same thing with Chrono Trigger, that game was godly and crazy good. It floors me that nearly 2 full generations have come to pass with nothing new for this franchise if you can even call it that with only two games. Sad

#7. Tetris

Anyone who does a best game list and doesn't include Tetris on it is either ignorant or a dirty filthy lying whore. It doesn't matter which version; Gameboy, Tengen NES, PC, Arcade.... whatever. This is the best puzzle game ever made. Fact. Whether you're playing it for 5 minutes or 50 minutes it can suck you in like few other games can. Other games like Puyo Puyo can come along and "borrow" parts of it and make it their own, but they never quite get it as good. This is a timeless classic and it's just as much fun to play today as it was 20 years ago.
