I don't know if there is a one solution set-up for all your needs. Depends what your priorities are. A good surround sound set-up to accompany your TV for the best movie and gaming experience would not make for a good sound set-up to enjoy your music on. Music is (with very few examples) recorded in stereo so has zero benefit from a surround rig. In fact to my ears it sounds much better on a dedicated stereo set up. Also the range of frequencies you need varies greatly between the two (though I suppose it also depends on the kind of music you want to be listening to). I mostly listen to bass-heavy music on vinyl so I need a very good low end whilst also having adequate performance in the mid and high sector. I have a KRK 10-inch sub-woofer and a pair of KRK 6-inch monitors. The three of them cost me about 850 euros. I consider them ridiculously good value for money for the quality you are getting. A similar rig by most other reputable brands would cost at least 300-400 more and might not even be of the same quality. But this is just for my music. Plus I also have a mixer to EQ everything on the spot and fine tune it accordingly. It would be rubbish for movies and games I think, dialogue and most sounds would sound muffled like on The Dark Knight Rises.

^Bugsy, I'd say for the game room TV my priorities would still be music. Any good music setup would be good enough for games and TV (given that I am not an audiophile, but still would rather appreciate getting the most out of a system for music.
No no no. You are getting it all wrong. Forget about this expensive wireless, every room music.
Keep your living room gear and buy a cheap but good wireless bluetooth speaker with built in rechargable battery. I have a yellow Betron one which is awesome with suprisingly excellent audio quality. The battery lasts like 12 hours so I only recharge it like once every two weeks. It connects easily to your phone and is light enough to move easily from room to room. You can even put it in a ziplock bag and have it in the bathroom while you shower.

Your phone is an mp3 player. The phone doesn't really impact on the quality of the sound output. It's the wireless transition method. You can get newer bluetooth speakers with zero compression.
All you need is speakers to connect it to easily. Bluetooth is the easiest method.
Okay. So I took the very expensive plunge and have started "investing" (expression men use for when they overpay for a luxury item) in Sonos sound gear.
Basically, you get these speakers, they sound great, and you have to get the connected to your wifi. From there you can "cast" from Windows music stored on your PC. There is also an option to stream music from free services (like radio stations around the world) or from the usual suspects.
You use an app on your Apple, Android or Window mobiles/ Tablets to control the speakers in each room -- what they are playing and at what volumes. You can set them up in stereo or surround sound.
For a small speaker the outlay is $230 AUD, a full home theatre set is ten times that.
Honestly I barely use it to stream my own music, I rely on internet radio genres (so if you select 80's music, there are about 60 different stations around the world that are streaming nothing but 80's music 24-7 for free).
So, so far so good. Only way this turns pearshape is that it relies largely on current operating systems, but if I don;t update my phones as I replace them, or tablets, they should be permenant remotes.
I use a phone radio app that has like 50 stations on it streaming from the internet and it works with my bluetooth speaker.
I was surprised to read the price you paid. A Sonos one speaker costs 230EUR here, it always seemed to me that stuff was in general more expensive in Australia, at least purely nummerically speaking.
When you said you started investing, I was expecting that meant going full audiophile and spending ten times the ten times figure quoted.

I went this path because I recognized that I was not listening to music anymore and had forgotten how therapeutic it can be.
So did you get a couple of Sonos ones to deploy around the house, or did you invest in a couple as a home theatre set as well?

I've only bought two speakers so far just to tip my toe in the water, but the plan is to get a full theatre setup and a maybe 3 more speakers for around the house.
Well here we are 5 years later and I still have no fucking clue of how to get proper audio for my TV's/ gaming TV's.
Any advice?
Surround sound without a bunch of cables. would be nice.

My knowledge is still limited to Sonos.
Aren't there soundbars these days that 'bounce' the sound off the walls of your room to deliver a sense of surround sound?
The simplest and best bang for your buck solution is decent powered monitors simply connected to the TV's audio output. You won't have surround sound, though. On the bright side, stereo directional projection is great.
